Botany & Harvesting Guide

Why botany belongs next to mining

Stars Reach is not only a rock-and-beam sandbox. Living planets grow plants, mushrooms, fruit, and trees that feed crafting, cooking, pharmacology groundwork, and homestead aesthetics. Steam Early Access arrives August 18, 2026 (AppID 1925650), and the Calm Before the Storm pre-launch update already treats cooking, ingredient status effects, and herbal medicine as first-class systems. If you only dig tunnels, you will starve your recipe book of organics that metals cannot replace.

This guide covers the four botany-facing tools most Reachers meet after Haven: the Harvester, Xyloslicer, pruning shears, and trowel. Pair it with Crafting Guide when organics enter PQRV recipes, Building Settlements when you shape gardens, and resources and rarity when the same mushroom on two planets behaves differently.

Start on Haven with the Harvester

Haven introduces the Harvester as your first botany tool. Point at small plants, bushes, mushrooms, berries, fallen logs, or fruit hanging from trees, then left-click to collect. Like the Terraformer workflow, TAB opens a selection list for flora you have already discovered so you can track a target species. E fires a directional pulse toward the nearest tracked plant or mushroom; when you are close enough, the target glows so you can finish the harvest without blind wandering.

Important caveats from playtest tooling:

  • Fallen logs often refuse the tracker—scan wooded ground with your eyes, especially in daylight.
  • Fruit on trees and many secondary drops are also tracker-blind; community knowledge matters (for example certain mushrooms yielding ammonia or antimatter-adjacent gases in craft chains).
  • Secondary gases and specialty organics reward careful species hunting more than random bush spam.

Treat the Harvester as your organic Terraformer: collect → catalogue → upgrade PQRV later. Starter profession tools get you moving; crafted upgrades keep pace with Early Access tuning.

Xyloslicer: wood, seeds, and clearing claims

The Xyloslicer is the forestry workhorse. Use it to fell trees for wood and seeds, clear overgrowth before a homestead pad, and relocate species across planets when you want a favorite canopy on a new world. Modes have included logging, seed planting, and pruning-related behaviors that interact with the Forestry skill tree—exact mode names can shift, so re-check patch notes after major drops such as Calm Before the Storm.

Practical habits:

  1. Clear only the footprint you will build or farm; living ecosystems punish mindless deforestation.
  2. Bank seeds before you erase a unique tree line you might miss later.
  3. Coordinate with friends who are mining the same ridge so logging and Terraformer pits do not fight each other.
  4. Upgrade PQRV when wood throughput or seed yield starts bottlenecking your workshop.

If fallen logs temporarily outyield whole trees during a buggy window, use that edge—but keep the Xyloslicer ready for claim clearing and seed logistics that the Harvester cannot replace.

Pruning shears: grow, stunt, and sculpt

Pruning shears look decorative until you see what Forestry nodes unlock. Growth beams can push saplings toward maturity far faster than waiting on world time. Homestead-limited stunt and shrink controls let you freeze a canopy height that fits a plaza or garden design. That is landscape architecture, not only farming.

Workflow many builders use:

  1. Plant with the trowel or planting mode.
  2. Grow to the height you want with shears (or Xyloslicer grow modes where those overlap).
  3. Stunt growth so the tree stops racing past your roof line.
  4. Shrink if you overshot, then stunt again.

Some prune functions have been homestead-only or temporarily incomplete in older notes. Expect Early Access iteration; verify interactions after Calm Before the Storm UI and crafting refreshes land in live builds.

Trowel: plant, remove, and pot

The trowel turns collected flora into a portable palette. Equip it, press TAB to pick a discovered seed or plant from your collection, then left-click to place it in the world. Q-style remove actions clear plants and mushrooms (not trees—use the Xyloslicer for those). With homestead decoration unlocks, pots let you plant indoors or on decks using contextual plant actions.

Trowel discipline keeps planets readable:

  • Replant after harvest if you care about shared biomes.
  • Move rare species into protected homestead beds before a strip-mining crew arrives.
  • Use pots for high-value decorative or craft-adjacent specimens you do not want mixed into wild respawn noise.

Skills, cooking, and why organics matter more now

Botany and Forestry live inside the classless skill forest. Spend points at a homestead, camp, or portal with K, then equip tool specials via ability loadouts. Atrophy older branches with respec in practice when you pivot from pure logging into garden curation or pharmacology feedstock runs.

Calm Before the Storm highlights cooking variants, stomach/meal buff design, and pharmacology groundwork that pulls herbal ingredients into medicine. Organics are no longer “nice decorations.” They are timed-station inputs, status-carrying ingredients, and trade goods. Cross-link economy and trading when you sell surplus seeds or specialty mushrooms instead of hoarding every berry.

Session plan for new botanists

  1. Finish Haven Harvester tutorials in Getting Started.
  2. Catalogue five flora species and one mushroom with a secondary craft use.
  3. Craft or buy a stronger Harvester and a basic Xyloslicer.
  4. Clear a small homestead garden pad (Building Settlements).
  5. Unlock early Forestry growth nodes; practice grow → stunt on one tree.
  6. Feed one cooking or crafting recipe that needs your organics (Crafting Guide).
  7. Revisit Controls if TAB/E pulse binds feel wrong after UI refreshes.

Harvest with a shopping list. In Stars Reach, the forest is a fabricator that grows overnight—if you leave enough of it standing to grow back.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What tools do I need for botany in Stars Reach?

Start with the Harvester on Haven, then add the Xyloslicer for trees, pruning shears for growth control, and the trowel for planting, removal, and pots.

Can the Harvester track every plant?

No. Tracking covers many discovered flora, but fallen logs, tree fruit, and some secondary drops often require eyes-on searching and community knowledge.

Do pruning shears work everywhere?

Growth tools are often usable broadly, while stunt and shrink controls have commonly been homestead-limited. Confirm live rules after each major patch.

Why should crafters care about botany?

Organics feed cooking, pharmacology groundwork, specialty gases, and PQRV-sensitive recipes that mining alone cannot supply.

Where should I learn forestry skills?

Spend skill points at a homestead, camp, or portal, then socket Forestry specials onto your tools through ability loadouts.
