Stars Reach Ability Loadouts
Customize the Specials on your tools—especially E and Q—before you leave camp.
What ability loadouts solve
Stars Reach separates unlocking Specials from enabling them. You may learn many actives across skill trees, but only a tight set can ride on the tool you are holding. Ability loadouts are the system that lets you choose which Specials occupy your active slots—most visibly E and Q—without pretending every unlock should be hotkeyed forever.
This matters from the first combat-ready sessions of Steam Early Access on August 18, 2026. Even when a tool only has a couple of experimentable Specials, learning the swap workflow early prevents wasted trips back from Crucible or deep survey routes.
E and Q Specials
Think of E and Q as your two currently enabled Special sockets for the equipped tool. Design posts and patch notes have described:
- Cooldown feedback on ability icons
- Reticle cues that reflect target validity and cooldown dots for both sockets
- Battery/tool state shown alongside the selected tool
- Specials that are conceptually “crafted into” the tool fantasy of that skill tree
Because sockets are limited, loadout choice is buildcraft. A pistol kit that wants mobility crowd control will socket different Specials than a pistol kit that wants burst pressure. The same character can retune between a mining escort and a camp defense shift—if they visit a valid swap point first.
Loadout Kiosks: camps and TPL
The first customizable ability loadout iteration added Loadout Kiosks in:
- Camps of all tiers
- Predetermined hubs such as the TPL Starbase
Interact with a kiosk to swap the abilities attached to E and Q on your currently equipped tool. During early iterations, pistols and grenade launchers were the first families with multiple Specials worth testing, while other tools had thinner menus. Expect Early Access to widen the catalog; the kiosk habit should stay useful regardless.
Why camps matter: Rangers and Settlers who keep camps active create natural retune stations for the whole party. A camp that people actually use is both an XP engine for camping-related trees and a logistics node for loadouts. That is classic Stars Reach interdependence.
Safe-area inventory swaps
Later UX work added a right-click path: in a safe area, right-click a tool in inventory to open ability swapping without walking to a kiosk. Outside safe areas, that option stays hidden so you cannot casually rebuild mid-firefight in the wild. Kiosks remain valid even after inventory swapping arrives.
Practical rule of thumb for Early Access:
- Plan the job before you leave Haven, Crucible staging, or the TPL Starbase.
- Equip the tool you will actually use.
- Set E/Q at a kiosk or via safe-area right-click.
- Depart.
- If the plan changes, fall back to a camp kiosk rather than improvising with the wrong Specials.
How loadouts connect to professions
Your starter profession only determines which tools you can meaningfully socket on day one.
- Valiant Soldier cares first because combat Specials show up early
- Intrepid Explorer and Peaceful Settler care because camps and Pathfinder loops create kiosk access for groups
- Brainy Scientist and Diligent Crafter care as gadget and crafted-tool Specials expand
Do not wait for a “perfect” tree fill. Practice the swap now with whatever Specials exist, then grow the menu through training.
Loadouts vs atrophy
Loadouts answer “which two Specials are live on this tool right now?” Atrophy and in-practice caps answer “which skills can I even use at all?” You need both concepts. If a Special’s parent skill has fallen out of practice, socketing it will not save you. Read respec in practice before a major pivot, then use loadouts for the fine grain.
Session templates
Hostile planet run (Crucible-style)
- Socket defensive or control Specials for the escort weapon
- Keep a camp plan so the party can retune after the first death spiral
- Bring enough battery awareness that you are not swapping on an empty tool
Survey and harvest run
- Prioritize traversal or utility Specials on exploration tools
- Park a camp near a rich node cluster discovered via Pathfinder habits—see planets and exploration
- Retune to combat sockets only when fauna or rivals force the issue
Crafting and trading day
- You may socket fewer combat Specials and spend more time at TPL or settlement kiosks
- Coordinate with buyers so the tools you craft match the Specials they want enabled—see economy and trading
UI cues worth learning
Patch notes have highlighted cooldown timers on special icons, battery indication behind the selected tool, a center reticle ring for target validity, and dual cooldown dots for Q and E. Learn those cues in a safe hub before you rely on them under pressure. If something looks wrong after a patch, check Early Access launch notes and ask in spaces linked from community and official links.
Common mistakes
- Leaving Haven with default Specials you never inspected
- Assuming every tool already has a deep Special menu on day one of Early Access
- Trying to rebuild mid-wilds when only kiosks or safe areas allow swaps
- Ignoring camps as loadout infrastructure
- Treating loadouts as a full respec—they are not a replacement for skill tree training

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where can I change my E and Q Specials?
Use Loadout Kiosks at camps and hubs such as the TPL Starbase. In safe areas, you may also right-click a tool in inventory to swap abilities when that UX is available.
Can I change loadouts anywhere in the wilderness?
Not freely. Safe-area inventory swaps are restricted, so plan around camps and hub kiosks before dangerous runs.
Do all tools have multiple Specials at Early Access launch?
Not necessarily. Early iterations focused on the loadout system itself, with richer menus on some weapon families first. Expect the catalog to grow during Early Access.
Are loadouts the same as respeccing skills?
No. Loadouts choose which unlocked Specials are active on a tool. Atrophy and in-practice limits still control which skills you can use at all.
Why do camps matter for loadouts?
Camps host Loadout Kiosks and create safe retune points between sorties, which makes camp craft valuable for the whole party.
